All these modules were more expensive, then run through even more expensive effects and EQ's. Some analogue no doubt, because it was the 80s. You're using a 1994 budget and tinny Rompler module to try and emulate songs that featured lots of different modules and synths mixed together. It sounds like you got the sequencing and panning and stuff down, but yes. I'm really going to try and help you with this, my tone may appear negative at points so i apologise, it is late and i'm trying to offer advice in a concise way. The Integra-7 has many of the same samples as the older SC-88 so it will sound nearly the same. My fear is, even if I go buy one of the best accredited ROMplers out there nowaways (namely the Integra-7), this won't help - it will still sound crap.
Many of the artists used sounds that are very similar or came from Roland modules, so I can't understand the difference. It always sounds crap compared to The Real Thing. closest patch I can find from the full GS set all notes quantised (except vocals for which I use GS.SynthBrass1 or 2) correct levels of pan, delay, effects like reverb, chorus, modulation I try to mimick the song exactly in terms of each instrument: Donna Summer "This Time I Know It's For Real" (I can send my attempt to anyone interested). I can never get it to sound the same like the actual hit song. I often imitate popular 80's synth hits by writing MIDI files and using my Roland SC-88 ROMpler as sound generator.
